Magna Carta is widely considered to be the most important political document in the history of civil government.

MAGNA CARTA, or the Great Char­ter, the name of the fa­mous char­ter of lib­er­ties which is the old­est most dis­tin­guished doc­u­ment of Great Bri­tain’s un­writ­ten con­sti­tu­tion.

It was giv­en roy­al as­sent in June of 1215 by King John of Eng­land, and for over four cen­turies pro­vid­ed the le­gal foun­da­tion for the tyran­nic rule of that coun­try’s monar­chs. It has al­so served as in­spi­ra­tion for the con­sti­tu­tions of oth­er na­tions, such as the Unit­ed States of Amer­i­ca.
