Marx­ists of the nine­teen-twen­ties be­lieved that Amer­i­ca’s full em­brace of so­cial­ism was coun­tered on­ly by her rich nat­u­ral re­sources, un­par­al­leled in­dus­tri­al growth, and lack of any rigid class struc­ture.  Prov­ing them wrong took near­ly a cen­tu­ry.
