The English al­pha­bet orig­i­nal­ly had on­ly 24 let­ters. Q and Z were lat­er ad­di­tions; their ab­sence can be seen in ar­cha­ic texts in which words like “EZ” and “BBQ” have their old­er spellings “easy” and “bar­be­cue.”
